Top Movies for a Girls Night In

A girl’s night in is almost a sacred ritual; we’ve been hosting them since we were old enough to, and every single one is even better than the last. No girls night in is complete without pyjamas; because being cosy and toasty is important; an extortionate amount of snacks; because we don’t really need a good figure as much as we need that tub of Ben and Jerries; and a stack of soppy, romantic, classic movies; because we like to chill out and dream we’re Hollywood starlets. Together with some good friends you have a recipe for perfection.

Part of the reason we love Mean Girls is because we can all relate a little to the typical high-school drama. We’ve all been through the tears and tantrums, as well as the good times. And like Lindsay Lohan’s character we all struggled to fit in at some point or another (however, unlike Lindsay Lohan we don’t now have an extensive criminal record…). The other reason we love Mean Girls is because it’s written by the wonderfully funny Tina Fey; a shining example that girls can be brilliant comedians regardless of the stereotype!

Our Favourite Quote: “On Wednesdays we wear pink.”

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

If you’re feeling romantic and weepy this film can be a bit of tear-jerker. On top of that it will leave you inspired to one day be even half as glamorous as the wonderfully talented Audrey Hepburn and her character Holly Golightly. The story follows the very strange life of Holly as she meets struggling writer Paul Varjack; the two fall in love, but Varjack finds out Holly isn’t all she claims to be and has quite a troubled past. This film must be watched in your little black dress and tiara whilst eating pastries, so you and your friends can remake that famous scene.

Our Favourite Quote: “A girl can’t read that sort of thing without her lipstick.”

Moulin Rouge

There has never been a film that can put people through quite so much of an emotional rollercoaster as this; not only is the director Baz Luhrmann responsible for some of the most beautiful films in existence (he’s making the Great Gatsby as I write this) but he also manages to leave you laughing at an eccentric but creepy duke one moment and in the next he rips out your heart as you watch love fall apart. Plus you’ll covet Nichole Kidman’s wardrobe more than you thought humanly possible.

Our Favourite Quote: “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.”

Marie Antoinette

This film is a feast for the eyes; there are gorgeous Manolo Blahnik shoes, adorable puppies, pretty gowns galore, decadent desserts and plenty of extravagant parties. The film documents the life of the young French queen Marie Antoinette through the highs and lows of her reign and her love life. It’s directed by Sophia Coppola, who also recently directed a Dior Perfume campaign; this lady knows what girls love, and she doesn’t fail to deliver it in this story. There’s also an excellent soundtrack!

Our Favourite Quote: (Emperor Joseph to Marie Antoinette) “Is your hair quite tall enough today? Maybe you can keep a pet in there or something.”
