Bonmarche Reveals Biggest Celebrity Style Icons

Women always desire to look their very best, regardless of their age. This has been revealed by a recent Bonmarch study, in which the top 10 celebrity women who inspire those over the age of 45 were revealed. It showed that women such as Helen Mirren, Joanna Lumley, Meryl Streep, and Jennifer Anniston were loved across the board.

UK fashion retailer Bonmarche is looking into who the greatest inspirations are for their target demographic – women over the age of 45. Women of all ages look towards celebrities to emulate their fashion style, but also their lifestyle on. Who they look towards, however, seems to change as they age. What does bring them all together, however, is that they always want to look their best. What changes, it seems, is the definition of ‘their best’.

What Bonmarche has done, therefore, is speak to a cross section of women aged 45 and above, from England, Scotland, and Wales, to determine who their greatest inspirations were. This revealed some surprising results. A good example would be fashion icon Madonna, who was an inspiration for teens during the 1980s and even 1990s. Those women are now in their mid to late 40s, yet Madonna is not mentioned at all in the top 10 list.

What this suggests is that women’s attitudes towards what looks good on them changes as they age. Someone like Madonna has a very defined style, but one that has not changed much over the course of her lengthy career. So who are the top 10 women that others look up to in terms of their fashion sense? They were revealed to be:

  1. Helen Mirren, in 19.2% of cases.
  2. Jennifer Anniston, in 16.3% of cases.
  3. Meryl Streep, in 14.5% of cases.
  4. Joanna Lumley, in 13.5% of cases.
  5. Nicole Kidman, in 10.3% of cases.
  6. Elle MacPherson, in 10% of cases.
  7. Julie Walters, in 8.1% of cases.
  8. Jane McDonald, in 5.9% of cases.
  9. Salma Hayek, in 5.4% of cases.
  10. Ruth Langsford, in 4.8% of cases.

These were the figures for woman across the board, and specifically for the age groups of 45 to 54, and 55 to 64. Reasons cited for Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, and Joanna Lumley focused mainly on these women’s sophisticated style. Jennifer Anniston was loved for her girl-next-door style, her hair and her skin, but also her attitude towards focusing on healthy living.

Only in the age group of 65 and older was there a change in the top 4, in as such that Jennifer Anniston dropped to fourth place. The percentages changed somewhat as well, with Helen Mirren, who remains in top position, being cited in 28.4% of cases. What really interested Bonmarche, and surprised them to some degree, was that women in Scotland felt otherwise. Here, Jennifer Anniston suddenly shot up to first position, cited in 27.8% of cases. It seems, therefore, that women in Scotland feel more inspired by someone youthful with healthy living habits as they become older.

Bonmarche’s e-commerce manager was fascinated by the results, seeing how women look up to women who have grown older very gracefully. Most of all, however, she noticed that, no matter what a woman’s age, they always want to look their best. She was quoted as saying:

“Looking fabulous at any age is easy and achievable – as proven by women such as Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep and Jennifer Anniston: they are in shape, dress for their body types and give off a healthy and confident vibe. It’s no wonder women across the United Kingdom take fashion cues from them.”
